Can you recolour imprinted concrete?

Is your imprinted concrete driveway looking a little tired? Or perhaps you’ve repainted your home and want a driveway that matches the new shade of your property? Whatever your reasoning for wanting to change the colour of your imprinted concrete driveway, we can help.

Can I change the colour of my imprinted concrete drive?

Yes, you can change the colour of your imprinted concrete drive. In fact, one of the easiest (and most affordable!) ways to give your driveway a new lease of life without replacing it is to try imprinted concrete recolouring. Regardless of whether you want to drastically change the colour of imprinted concrete or you’d simply like to refresh the current shade, the process remains the same.

Can you colour concrete after it has dried?

The answer to this question varies depending on whether the concrete surface has been sealed. If the dried concrete has not yet been sealed, then you will be able to colour it with a suitable staining solution. However, if the surface of the concrete has been sealed, then you won’t be able to colour the surface. Instead, you’ll need to remove the sealer using a solvent before you can attempt to stain the concrete in your preferred shade.

Can you paint imprinted concrete?

Yes, imprinted concrete can be painted. In fact, there exists a wide range of special paints that can be applied to concrete surfaces. For imprinted concrete in particular, you’ll need a masonry epoxy paint that can fill in any holes and spread evenly to ensure a smooth finish. It’s also important to bear in mind that any painted concrete surface will also require sealing to prevent the paint from peeling, flaking or being worn away/damaged by pedestrians and vehicles alike.

How do you colour imprinted concrete?

  • Choose the right colour

First and foremost, you’ll need to purchase a suitable concrete staining product, dye, tint, powder or paint in the colour of your choice. A wide variety of concrete colouring products exist, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the perfect shade of staining solution for your driveway.

  • Prepare the base

Secondly, if necessary, you’ll need to remove the layer of sealant from your current imprinted concrete driveway. As the sealant helps to ‘seal in’ the colour and prevent it from fading, it must be removed using a suitable solvent stripper before recolouring. Once this layer has been successfully removed, you’ll be able to move onto the next step of the process.

  • Apply the colour

Next, you’ll need to apply the concrete colour by following the specific application instructions of the colouring product you’ve chosen. Typically, however, concrete stain can be easily applied using either a roller with an extension pole or a sprayer. While applying the product, you should try to maintain an even layer and if necessary, apply several layers to achieve a smooth and even finish.

  • Reseal the surface

Once stained, you can begin the final stage of recolouring imprinted concrete – sealing. As mentioned previously, the sealant helps to protect the colour, ensuring the hue remains bright and clear for many years to come. Best of all, driveway sealer of varying quantities can be easily picked up from DIY and home improvement stores for wonderfully affordable prices.

  1. Hi – our imprinted driveway has somehow been damaged by someone spilling something on it before we moved in. I have been reading your useful information and wonder if you actually sell the correct paint? It’s about 3 feet square the damage . The colour is a mid grey. Thanks for any advice you can give
